China has emerged as the undisputed leader in artificial intelligence model development, launching 1,509 large AI systems that represent more than 40% of the 3,755 models deployed globally, according to findings unveiled at the 2025 World AI Conference in Shanghai.

The impressive figures underscore China’s strategic push to establish dominance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The nation has built what industry experts describe as a comprehensive AI ecosystem spanning from basic infrastructure to specialized sector applications, positioning itself at the forefront of the global artificial intelligence race.

Robust Industrial Foundation

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology reveals the depth of China’s AI commitment. The country hosts more than 5,100 AI companies—approximately 15% of the global total—while nurturing 71 AI unicorns that comprise roughly one-quarter of the world’s 271 billion-dollar AI startups.

Yu Xiaohui, president of CAICT, emphasized the significance of this year’s rapid advancement in foundational large models. “The continuous iteration of these systems, combined with innovative technological approaches, demonstrates considerable potential for progress toward Artificial General Intelligence,” Yu stated during the conference.

Corporate Giants Drive Innovation

The backbone of China’s AI supremacy lies in its corporate structure. More than 300 publicly listed companies with AI operations generate approximately 70% of the nation’s total AI industry revenue, according to CAICT analysis. These established players, alongside emerging startups and specialized firms, create what Yu describes as a “promising innovation landscape.”

Chinese AI unicorns are particularly active in five key areas: large language models, autonomous vehicle technology, intelligent robotics, business intelligence applications, and AI computing chips. This diversification across multiple sectors indicates a mature and well-rounded approach to AI development.

Economic Impact and Global Implications

The AI sector has evolved into a crucial engine for China’s economic transformation, driving what officials term “high-quality economic and social development.” The rapid expansion reflects a continuous influx of new technologies, applications, and business models that are reshaping traditional industries.

The 2025 World AI Conference, which concluded Monday under the theme “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” brought together senior representatives from over 40 countries and international organizations. The concurrent High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance highlighted the increasing importance of international cooperation in AI development and regulation.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape global technology landscapes, China’s commanding lead in model development signals its intention to maintain a central role in defining the future of AI innovation and application across industries worldwide.
