This comprehensive document outlines the rigorous safety evaluations and risk assessments conducted prior to the model’s public launch in May of this year.
The System Card reveals that OpenAI employed a team of external security experts, known as red teamers, to probe for potential vulnerabilities in GPT-4o. This standard practice in the tech industry aimed to identify key risks associated with the model, including unauthorized voice cloning, generation of inappropriate content, and reproduction of copyrighted audio material.
Using their proprietary risk assessment framework, OpenAI researchers classified GPT-4o as posing a “medium” overall risk. This rating was derived from evaluations across four critical categories: cybersecurity, biological threats, persuasion, and model autonomy. While three of these categories were deemed low risk, the persuasion category raised some concerns. Researchers found that in certain instances, GPT-4o’s writing samples could be more effective at influencing readers’ opinions compared to human-authored text, although this was not consistently the case.
OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum Rémy explained that the System Card incorporates preparedness evaluations from both internal teams and external entities. These external evaluators, listed on OpenAI’s website as Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR) and Apollo Research, specialize in developing assessments for AI systems.
The release of this System Card comes at a crucial juncture for OpenAI, as the company faces mounting scrutiny over its safety practices. Recent controversies, including CEO Sam Altman’s brief removal from his position and the departure of a key safety executive, have intensified calls for greater transparency in AI development and deployment.
Furthermore, the timing of GPT-4o’s release, just ahead of a U.S. presidential election, raises questions about the potential for AI models to inadvertently spread misinformation or be exploited by bad actors. OpenAI’s decision to publish the System Card appears to be an effort to demonstrate their commitment to testing real-world scenarios and preventing misuse.
The AI community and policymakers have been vocal in their demands for increased transparency from OpenAI, not only regarding the model’s training data but also its safety testing procedures. In California, state Senator Scott Wiener is spearheading legislation to regulate large language models, which would require companies like OpenAI to comply with state-mandated risk assessments before making their models publicly available.
While the GPT-4o System Card represents a step towards greater openness, it also highlights the ongoing reliance on self-evaluation within the AI industry.
