G7 Nations to Implement AI Code of Conduct

The Group of Seven (G7) industrial nations is set to establish a code of conduct for companies engaged in the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems, according to a G7 document seen by Reuters. Governments worldwide are striving to address the associated risks and potential misuse of AI technology. This voluntary code of conduct is poised to be a significant development in the regulation of AI, particularly in the context of privacy concerns and security threats.

The G7 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union. The initiative for this code of conduct was launched in May during a ministerial forum known as the “Hiroshima AI process.”

The code, consisting of 11 points, is designed to foster the worldwide use of safe, secure, and reliable AI technology, especially in the context of advanced foundation models and generative AI systems. It aims to harness the benefits of AI while addressing the risks and challenges these technologies bring.

The code encourages companies to adopt appropriate measures to identify, assess, and mitigate risks throughout the AI development lifecycle. It also emphasizes the importance of addressing incidents and misuse patterns that may emerge after AI products have been introduced to the market.

Additionally, the code calls for companies to publish public reports detailing the capabilities, limitations, and responsible use of AI systems. Robust security controls are also recommended as a vital component of AI development.

While the European Union has taken a proactive stance in regulating AI through its comprehensive AI Act, other regions, including Japan, the United States, and Southeast Asian countries, have adopted a more laissez-faire approach to stimulate economic growth. European Commission digital chief Vera Jourova has endorsed the Code of Conduct as a strong foundational measure to ensure AI safety, bridging the gap until formal regulations are in place.
