Microsoft has enlisted the expertise of OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to spearhead a cutting-edge AI research team, as revealed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday. This announcement closely follows OpenAI’s decision to appoint former Twitch chief Emmett Shear as CEO, a move that contradicted investor demands for the reinstatement of Sam Altman, a co-founder since 2015.
Nadella expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.”
Navigating Turbulence: The OpenAI Exodus and the Road Ahead
It’s worth noting that Nadella hinted at potential additional hires by mentioning that Altman and Brockman would be joined by “colleagues,” suggesting Microsoft’s intent to bring on board other former OpenAI talents who recently departed.
Despite Microsoft’s substantial financial investment in OpenAI, Nadella reaffirmed the commitment to their partnership. “We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them,” Nadella added.
In an acknowledgment post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman confirmed his move to Microsoft, quoting Nadella with “the mission continues.” In response, Nadella hinted at Altman’s role at Microsoft, emphasizing the company’s track record of allowing founders and innovators to develop independent identities and cultures within Microsoft. This approach has been successful with entities like GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, setting the stage for Altman to do the same.
