The OpenAI circus has come to a surprising conclusion as Sam Altman makes a triumphant return as the Chief Executive Officer. This unexpected development overturns his recent removal by the company’s board and follows an intense campaign led by Altman’s allies, employees, and investors. The result is a significant restructuring of OpenAI’s board.

In the official announcement, OpenAI stated, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to resume his role as CEO with a new initial board consisting of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. We are actively working on finalizing the details. Thank you for your patience throughout this process.”

The reinstatement of Altman and the potential board overhaul marks the end of a tumultuous five days that brought unprecedented upheaval to OpenAI, a renowned artificial intelligence company known for its ChatGPT chatbot.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also weighed in on the matter, stating on X that he, along with Sam and Greg, recognizes their crucial role in OpenAI’s leadership team. They are committed to ensuring the company continues to thrive and fulfill its mission. Nadella added, “We look forward to strengthening our partnership and delivering the value of this next generation of AI to our customers and partners.”

Altman returns as the CEO, and the reformed board will be chaired by Bret Taylor, a former co-CEO of Salesforce.com Inc. and director at Twitter. Other directors include Larry Summers, the former US Treasury Secretary, and the existing member Adam D’Angelo, co-founder, and CEO of Quora.
